This is a short cardigan, but the length is up to you. It is just mesh stitch plus ribbed pattern at the sides. I used cotton yarns, those left overs yarn from previous projects. I used a 4.5 mm hook for the mesh stitch and 4 mm hook on the ribbed pattern.
The tutorial video :
Start by making several rows of ribbed pattern for the back panel, bottom part. Use a 4 mm hook. To make the ribbed pattern, make a foundation chain of 11 stitches. Turn the work, from the 2nd stitch onwards, do single crochet (sc) only on the back loop. You should have 10 stitches each row. At the end of the row, chain 1, turn the work and repeat sc on the back loop until the end. Build this ribbed pattern up to the length you want. I normally measured it against my body.
Once you have the length you want, turn the work, this time the ribbed pattern looks vertical instead of horizontal. Change your hook to a 4.5 mm. Chain 1, do sc until the end of the row. Now we will start to build the mesh stitch. You need a multiple of 5 plus 2 to make the mesh stitch pattern.
Chain 3, turn the work, go to the 2nd stitch of the chain 3 and pull up a yarn, leave it on the hook. Then go to the next stitch and pull up a yarn and put thru 2, by 2. This is called a link double crochet. Then chain 3, skip 3, and do a double crochet (dc) follow by a link double crochet (refer to tutorial video). Repeat until the end of the row.
The next row, chain 1, turn the work, do sc in the next 2 (on top of the previous dc) and do 3 sc into the space area. Repeat until the end of the row and you 'll have a row of mesh stitch pattern. Continue to build this mesh stitch to the length that you want.
Once you have the right length, on both sides we are going to chain 60 to make the sleeves, one on the left and one on the right (refer to tutorial video). Now continue to build the back panel and the sleeves. Measure it on your arms to see how many rows of mesh pattern you need.
When you reach the length that you want, now leave the middle part of the back panel (around 7 to 8 boxes of mesh pattern) aside. We will build the mesh pattern up till this middle part (refer to video). Now we are building the front panel. So there will be no sewing on the shoulder part.
If you want to increase the number of mesh stitch at a certain row, do it when you are doing the sc row. At the end of the sc add 2 sc increase. The following row, at the increase part, do the dc, and dc link like before, but chain 1 instead and skip 1 instead of 3 and continue the next mesh stitch like before, that is dc, dc link, chain 3, skip 3.
I only did increase once. If you prefer to add buttons or want both the side front panel able to meet, then do a few more increase until both sides can meet.
Once you complete the back and front panel, now sew the sides of the cardigan and the sleeves and add ribbed pattern on the sleeves and the bottom of the front panel. Make sure you have a row of sc before doing the ribbed pattern and remember to change to a smaller hook size. The last part, add ribbed pattern on the edges or sides of the 2 front panel and you will have a lovely cardigan. If you want to make it colorful like mine, please refer to the tutorial video.
